I used to be into Ultimate Fighting a lot when it first came out with Royce Gracie, Severn, Shamrock, etc. I think it was a lot better then, they had no weight classes (toughest and best wins plain and simple) and even had to fight several matches in one night, lol, the tournament style back then was great, it sure has changed (and why did it anyway?), or become easier now a days for fighters I think. Gracie used to fight people 75-100 pounds over his weight too, example Dan Severn. I liked Gracie a lot, sucks to hear he lost. I won't of minded seeing that match. I really wish Gracie would of won, that would of been great. Sounds like the referee stooped the match when he shouldn't of too (too early), especially considering Gracie can win a match at any time with submission (and has), even when he's losing a match. Not right. Gracie did say after the match that he has a few matches left in him. Gotta give Gracie a lot of respect for his first fight back in over 10 years and wanted to take on the best Fighter in UFC. Results: blogs.foxsports.com/FOXSportsMMA

I don't know much about Ultimate Fighting now a days, but Gracie used to be the man back in the day and unstoppable. If he was in a tournament, you knew he was gonna win it, and the other fighters I think knew too. They must of loved when Gracie wasn't in a tournament because they knew there would have to be a new winner and they actually had a chance to win it without Gracie in it, ha ha.
Shamrock vs Gracie was great stuff.

Yeah that era of UFC was a lot better than it is now. I'd love to see the top 8 guys, regardless of weight class, fight in that one-night tourny. I'm willing to bet that the finals of the tournament wouldn't have any of the top 4 guys in UFC in it.

I agree with you Alpha, I really miss the tournament style and wish they still had it, it was so much more fun to watch. Who's idea was it to get rid of it and why did they anyway? Lol, doesn't make sense. And now they only fight once and get paid like 10 times more then back then I bet. When I was watching some of Gracie matches (on Spike TV) before the match they said, "So far winner of like $110,000". I was like what? Now they get a lot more than that for one match, lol. Some things I just don't understand, lol. Gracie deserves so much money for what he did for the sport.

Unfortunitely after just viewing the match, I think the referee was right to call the match. Hughes had Gracie pinned (Hughes stomach on Gracie's back) and just unloaded on him with strong right and left hand punches to Gracie's head while Gracie had no defense for it and just kept getting hit, so I guess maybe it was right to stop the match.
Unfortunitely (again), it actually looked like Hughes Wrestled how Gracie used to, getting Gracie on the match and almost getting him in submission moves and he had a strong arm submission going on.
I still believe a Gracie in his prime would of won though, and maybe with more training if Gracie is serious now he could defeat Hughes.
