In a story that will never end, former WWE and current TNA referee Earl Hebner recently spoke to the Charleston Post-Courier’s Mike Mooneyham regarding the infamous “Bret Hart screwjob at Survivor Series 1997.” For the younger fans that do not remember, Hebner called for the bell during Bret Hart’s match against Shawn Michaels at the pay-per-view, causing Hart to lose the then WWF Title before leaving the company prior to his departure for WCW.
Hebner admitted that at the time it seemed like the right thing to do but now he would have not agreed. He said that he wasn’t told anything until ten minutes before the match started when Gerald Brisco finally let him in on the finish. When Hebner questioned why he wasn’t told earlier, Brisco told him that “everyone was bugged” (they were filming “Wrestling with Shadows” at the time and Bret Hart was wearing a live wire).
Hebner said that he recalled a conversation that he had with Bret at dinner the night before when Hart brought up the chance of him getting double crossed as he made his way to the ring. Hebner commented, “I never said I wouldn’t double-cross him” he continued, “I told him I wouldn’t count him out as long as his shoulders were up. And that’s a true story so help me God.”
Following the match Hebner fled from the arena to his brothers Dave’s packed rental car where they rushed to a hotel then to the airport to fly home. Hebner said that he felt that McMahon was justified for breaching the contract because “Bret could have dropped it [the WWF Title] a lot earlier than Montreal.”

Yeah, now Hebner wouldn't agree to doing it because he's not on good terms or with the WWE, so of course he'd now be against it/them, lol.
Only knew 10 minutes before the match, that's tough, and interesting.
