Bruno Sammartino Blasts The WWE Hall Of Fame By Wade Needham
02/19/2005 - Credit: 1Wrestling.com
Bruno Sammartino lashes out at the state of wrestling today in an AP story today. Sammartino says he turned down a recent invitation to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame saying, "I've completely divorced myself from the wrestling world. I don't believe in it."
Commenting further, "I would wonder where my principles are if I accepted (the WWE's invitation)," Sammartino said. "Anyway, their hall of fame is a joke."
Sammartino says in the AP story he stopped watching wrestling completely when he saw Stone Cold Steve Austin drinking beer on television.
According to the AP story, Superstar Billy Graham tried unsuccessfully to talk Sammartino into accepting induction to the Hall of Fame. Graham was quoted as saying, "All the wrestling fans want him in, but the hall of fame doesn't mean anything to him."

Graham is right. Most people do want to see him in there and it really sucks that he doesn't care about it.
WWE has to have the entertainment factor because we are in a day and an age that if people aren't entertained, they don't care. Him seeing Stone Cold drinking beer made him stop watch wrestling?? I'm a fan of technical wrestling, but most of the viewers today could care less about wrestling if it didn't have that extra "entertainment" factor added in, which is kinda sad, but true. There would be a whole lot fewer viewers watch wrestling if it was just straight up wrestling. If they wanted that they can watch amateur wrestling. They like the extra "pizzaz" that the WWE adds to it which is just fine.
I personally don't agree with Sammartino's views. Him being a purist, I can see his point, but still. I think many others might feel the same way and ya know something, the wrestling world could lose a major player with all the history he's had and all he did, because a lot of the younger audience has no clue who he is. If he was inducted to the WWE Hall of Fame, then I bet more of the younger generation would see all he has accomplished and done and come away with a greater appreciation for some of the classic stuff. The real classic stuff.
Maybe if he realized this, his views would be a little different. Maybe not, I don't know. I sure am in a talkative mood today though. I kinda rambled on a bit, lol.

Yeah, i have read about this. It's a shame and disappointment that Sammartino feels this way about the Hall Of Fame cause i'm sure all the wrestling fans would of liked to see him be inducted but it seems like he has made up his mind and there's no changing it

I have to give Bruno respect for his decision. The WWF and WWE are 2 totally different leagues or worlds, from then to now. When Bruno wrestled they had morals and where good role models. Now WWE teaches our youth to hit people with sledge hammers instead of wrestle them like Triple H, drink beer in front of children and you'll be cool like Stone Cold (or stick the middle finger up at everybody), join WWE and pose in Playboy and you'll be famous and a superstar in a minute, for some examples. I'm down with Bruno, and it's not just because he's Italian like myself.

Sammartino has to relise that wrestling like life has to move on. So he doesn't like the current programme and disagrees with the direction things took but what he fails to understand if wrestling had of stayed the way it was it wouldn't be no where near as big as it is today.
I'm sick and tired of reading about 'legends' who take every oppurtunity to blast the shows of today. Look at 2 recent examples Ted Dibiase + Jake Roberts. Dibiase spouted about the 'moral corruptness' and Roberts said 'the programme was unwatchable' and 'couldn't care less about it'. Now lo and behold Dibiase has a job as a road agent and Jake appeared on last Monday night's Raw. Guess all the biotch ing and whining stops when the almighty dollar is thrust their way. Guess Dibiase was right 'everybody has a price!'

Guess Dibiase was right 'everybody has a price!' Lol, nice, yeah, I guess so in Ted Dibiase's world. Wrestling would still be big, you don't have to have bad morals, prostitution (Playboy), and curruption to have entertainment in Wrestling. They lost fans because of that as well as gained some. Wrestling definitly isn't bigger now than it used to be. Hulkamania and Macho Madness was huge.

Maybe. But you see that stuff thrown at you all over television, not just when it comes to wrestling. Seems like, things such as that get ratings, not that I'm saying it should, but it does, and without good ratings WWE would be losing major bucks and eventually wouldn’t be able to afford tv time slots anymore. Without tv, they’d be set back really far. Before everything went national, wrestling was big, but it wasn't that big. If it wasn’t for tv the WWE wouldn’t be anything like it is today.
You can't please everybody. WWE can't please everybody. Sucks, but that's how it is.

I hate that Bruno doesn't want to be in the HOF but I can see where's he coming from though. I haven't watched wrestling very often myself for the past few years mostly because it just doesn't hold my interest long enough.
He did make a good point that wrestling now a days isn't fit for young children to watch with the beer guzzling, obscene gestures and foul language going on. But then again, there's not much else out there that is fit for kids to watch on TV either. Even some of these cartoons and video games are getting really bad as well. I guess the wrestling business is just keeping up with the times.

Without Bruno, we wouldn't have the wrestlers of the 80s, 90s, or today.
Bruno should've been inducted long before Hogan and I am a biggest Hogan fan around.

Bruno is WWF, that is true, he's been there since day 1 and contributed greatly, but Bruno doesn't like the direction the WWF has taken the second half of it's career so far, that is true, and I agree with what he's saying.

I See were Bruno is comeing from.
But I have to agree he needs to accept Wrestling has changed and moved on.
It's a shame someone who contributed so much to the sucess of a company now hates it and the buissness.
(On a side note what DiBiase was always against was the overly racey Attitued Era. It has to be said that since then WWE has Toned it down some what. It's still not a show for young kids but it's deffinatly not as racey as it was back in the late 90's. So I don't think he's comprimised his stand point that much.)
