I was just thinking, I feel bad that "Cowboy" Bob Orton had a Cast on his arm for a year or two. He had so much potential, it's a shame his arm was hurt for so long. Ace was still a great Wrestler and him and Roddy Piper together were unstoppable, even Mr.T didn't stand a chance against "Boxing Bob" Orton. Do you think his Cast held back his potential?

It may have. Now, I don’t claim to be an expert on Bob Orton, but I thought it was just a gimmick. I’m sure initially, he probably did have an injured arm, and this did all happen before I was ever even born, but I was under the impression that he just kept it on as part of his whole character thing. Was it really injured all that time? Even if he wasn’t, he might have been told to keep the cast which definately could have held him back. I do agree though, that he could have went farther in the business. Everybody has seen how far Randy has went and I think his father was every bit as good of a wrestler as he is.

Bob Orton just wore it as a gimmick kinda like Owen Hart did in the mid 90's. For me Randy is 100% better than his father. Bob was an old fashioned brawler who i felt worked better in a tag team. Randy for me can do everything there is in wrestling-cut promos-technical-brawling etc.

Bob could actually wrestle good, but after a certain point in his career he saw that it didn't get him very far and that's when he turned into more of the brawler type that people usually think of when they think of him.
Like I've said, I wasn't around then, but I've seen a few of his promos and I thought they were pretty good. He was a funny guy, though he did lack much of the charisma that makes Randy a natural at cutting promos, etc. which was detrimental to his career. If he had the charisma like Randy does, I have no doubt he could have been world champion level.

Nothing beat a good Piper's Pit. I don't think Randy could pull off that versatile, quick witted comedy that "Cowboy" Bob and Roddy Piper pulled off.
"Ace" and "Rowdy" Piper as a team were unstoppable, and they were always down to give other Wrestlers who thought they were tough a beat down in the "Pit". Snuka and the Coconut is a "Classic" scene from the "Piper's Pit". Also "Cowboy" Bob and "Rowdy" Roddy Piper at Uncle Elmer's wedding was great, then when Ace, Piper, and Jesse Ventura had a 6-Man Tag-Team Match against them was great.

Well i wasn't around when Bob Orton was entertaining our screens but i have seen vids etc of him and from what i have seen he seemed a very entertaining and comical wrestler. And i think the whole gimmick with him and his cast and how he would use it in the match was a pretty clever idea and could only be done by him!

His evil fake injured arm was awesome. Possibly the reason why Piper won most of his matches in 1985/1986. Piper would be in trouble, distract the ref, and Orton would waffle him with the cast.

Lol, you remember it nicely, good deal. It was great when Piper and Orton went to the Doctor's office with Vince to get it checked on and x-ray results, great stuff.

I must be the old fart around here as I was around when all the Ace Orton stuff was happening.
From what I recall, his arm was hurt in the storyline during the War to Settle the Score when Hogan bashed it on the ring post. There was some speculation that Jimmy Snuka broke it earlier in the evening in a one-on-one much but I don't have that confirmed. They just worked it in every chance they could after that.
As far as his 1985-1987 WWF period, he was recovering from an injury that put his wrestling on a limited basis and he was very happy collecting a large paycheck just by being Piper's bodyguard.
In my opinion (and this is comparing apples and oranges) I enjoyed him better than his son. Some of his matches and promos (especially against Bob Backlund in 1982 and some of his NWA stuff in 1983) was very good, but can be considered boring in comparison to today.
He was also one of the first technicians to use a high-risk top rope manuever (superplex) and his humor was sublte yet hilarious, oftentimes something you would have to go back and see again.
For example in the 1986 SNME when he faced Piper and he and Ventura are at a resturant conducting an interview, it begins with Ventura saying, "Great food, but don't eat the burritos, they give you gas." Orton and Jimmy Hart laugh and Orton slips in "Give me a dozen of them."
Subtle stuff like that made the old school so enjoyable.

I didn't know that's how it started, thanks for the insite, pretty cool how some of the best storylines (that last) come from accident, broken arm in this case. Lol, I actually remember that burrito skit (actually watched it again a few weeks ago too), it was funny, Bob did have some great lines that he smoothly added here and there. I totally agree, I like Bob Orton way better than Randy, but then again I like 80s Wrestling way better than current Wrestling, like 100-1.

Cowboy Bob Orton makes an appearance on Smackdown this week!!!! Thanks for the heads up Ace, I actually watched and enjoyed it, thanks. Yeah, it was good to see Bob Orton back, I felt like he should of been in Piper's Pit though, it wasn't the same without him. Also it was weird how both the Caribbean guy and Stone Cold both beat up Piper, that wasn't right at all, and if "Cowboy" Bob Orton was there it definitly wouldn't of happened.
