I was always intrigued by the annual Main Events that aired on NBC in February, starting with 1988. While that one lived up to its hype with the final chapter of the Randy Savage - Honky Tonk Man feud and the infamous "twin referee" Hogan - Andre Title Match, I found that each year, the specials lost some prominence enjoyed by the previous one. The second year had the MegaPowers implode, 1990 was a battle between Hogan and Savage after their feud had died out, and the last one on NBC in 1991 centred around the tension between Iraqi sympathizer Sgt. Slaughter and American patriots Hulk Hogan and "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan. Would you guys agree the quality dropped each year and if so, why? It would seem to be in the W.W.F.'s best interest to make their once-a-year shot on prime time a very special event, but if it lost steam each time out, they were really shooting themselves in the foot. Thoughts?

The Main Event served a purpose during its run from 88-91 because WWF wasn't running PPVs every month or had 2 major TV shows each week broadcast nationally. With Raw & Smackdown running, I seriously doubt The Main Event coming back.....but then again....I never thought SNME would come back either.

The quality did indeed drop and the reason was because all the good talent in the WWF had left and those that were left were turned into useless gimmicks like Tito Santana,Rick Martel,Terry Taylor etc
The best ever SNME in my opinion was October 1986,which I consider the Roddy Piper show, first he interfered in the Hogan/Orndorff title match by hitting Adrian Adonis with a crutch, then pinned the Iron Sheik and later in the dressing room produced perhaps his best interview ever in the WWF

Old Schooler has a good point. That was a hell of an SNME; I only saw the 1986 ones later on because I didn't start tuning into them until early '87. Honestly, though, for me the ones in late '87 really kicked ass for me. The joining of the Mega-Powers in October of that year after Savage vs. Honky Tonk, Orndorff being re-born as a babyface, Bam Bam's NBC debut, a classic Bret vs. Savage match - those memories will never be erased and was some of the best stuff "in the moment" I'd ever seen.

1990 was a battle between Hogan and Savage after their feud had died out, That wasnt the main part/point of the show really, the whole thing was built on pushing and building up the Warrior Vs. Hogan thing for WM6, thus most definetly played its part and pretty well, despite only having the two matches, and obviously if your not a fan of Hogan or Warrior it would of been sh*t but you know, lol...

Yeah, but they were falling back on the safe with Hogan vs. Savage. They still could have built Hogan v. Warrior in a more interesting way. As good as Hogan v. Savage was, did we really need to see it for the hundredth time? Main Event only happened once a year, and it was pretty important to feature something special, like Hogan v. Andre or the Mega-Powers against the Twin Towers. Guess I shouldn't complain, though. '91s was even worse.
