This week for That's My Story and I'm Sticking To It I'll be telling you what I think of the ECW storylines.
When the ECW brand was relaunched in June of last year many ECW fans thought it was what they had been waiting to see since the original ECW closed but after The Sandman caned The Zombie it was obvious that this wasn't what many ECW fans expected when the brand was relaunched. WWE stars began appearing on the ECW T.V. show and there really wasn't any story lines except for the ECW title storyline.
It might be because of WSX going head to head with the ECW T.V. show but since the debut of WSX the WWE creative team has finally started an interesting storyline that the fans might actually want to watch. The originals v.s. the new breed is a storyline that the fans might actually want to watch to see what happens and who is going to win the feud. When ECW was relaunched the originals were basically jobbers for the new breed and it's cool to see the originals being more then just jobbers. The originals are Tommy Dreamer, The Sandman, RVD, and Sabu. Tommy Dreamer is the heart of ECW and he's one of the few major stars that didn't leave ECW for WCW or WWE. It's obvious that Dreamer wrestles for the fans and not because of the amount of money he makes for a show. If you watched The Rise and Fall of ECW you know that there were times that Dreamer wrestled for free towards the end of the original ECW and that proves that Dreamer is the heart of ECW. The Sandman is defiantly one of the most unique wrestlers in the history of pro wrestling and the lack of "Extreme Rules" match have really limited what The Sandman can do in the new ECW but I think The Sandman can still add alot to ECW. Sabu is one the most innovative wrestler in the history of pro wrestling and up until recently Sabu didn't get the credit he deserves for the innovative moves he can do in the ring. The moves might not be as spectacular as they were during the original ECW because of Sabu getting older but there are still impressive moves. Sabu was also involved in some good matches a few months ago during a feud with The Big Show for the ECW title. Rob Van Dam is a good wrestler and it's been reported that RVD could be leaving the WWE because he thinks he should get a better push but RVD doesn't have any right to complain about losing matches. RVD was given a chance and he ruined the opportunity to be the ECW champion. The wrestlers for the new breed in the feud are Elijah Burke, Matt Striker, Kevin Thorn, and Marcus Cor Von. Elijah Burke isn't terrible in the ring and he has some good mic skills so I think he could do the talking for the new breed and help the feud. Matt Striker was some technical ability but I just don't think he should be wrestling in ECW. Kevin Thorn has a unique character but it would probably make more sense if he was wrestling on Raw or Smackdown because ECW wasn't about vampires. Marcus Cor Von, who is known to some fans as Monty Brown has the potential to become a star but he would need to improve his in ring work and mic skills. It will be interesting to see if there will be an originals v.s. the new breed match at Wrestlemania.
The ECW title storyline really shows how weak the ECW brand is and I don't think that Bobby Lashly should be the ECW champion. It seems like the WWE is trying to continually push Lashley as the next major star, but its just adding to the ECW brand’s laundry list of problems. Lashley doesn’t have the charisma, the in-ring ability, or the mic skills to be a main event star. Lashley does have potential but its clear that he is being pushed way too early as a main event star. Lashley is still not an established star with the name value or star power to main event a PPV. Test was challenging for the ECW title and it's a little ironic that Test get suspended after his push and he didn't become an established heel in ECW. Hardcore Holly challenged for the title but what makes Holly a legitimate challenger for the title? Now it seems like Snisky will be challenging for the title and this is another weak attempt for the WWE to use the ECW brand to establish a wrestler that couldn't become an established star on Raw or Smackdown.
Overall I think the ECW brand has improved but it's still a really weak brand. If this slight improvement is because of the debut of WSX it shows that competition helps wrestling.
Until next week
